There is a lot of confident, wrong advice about sinks. Here are the myths we hear most — and what is actually true.
Myth: “If a magnet sticks, it isn’t real stainless steel.”
Fact: Forming a sink can make even genuine 304 slightly magnetic in spots. A magnet cannot prove the grade. The reliable check is the manufacturer’s specification and a verifiable product code.
Myth: “Thicker steel is always better.”
Fact: A heavier gauge feels solid and resists dents, but past a point it adds weight and cost, not performance. Welding quality, finish and sound-dampening matter just as much.
Myth: “A matt finish scratches more easily.”
Fact: Matt actually hides fine scratches and water spots better than glossy. Both finishes are durable; matt is simply more forgiving day to day.
Myth: “Undermount sinks only work with stone counters.”
Fact: Undermount works with any solid, water-resistant countertop that is properly sealed. Stone is popular, not compulsory.
Myth: “All stainless sinks are basically the same.”
Fact: Grade (304 vs 202), construction (handcrafted vs pressed), finishing and sound engineering create real, lasting differences. See 304 vs 202.
