304 vs 202 Stainless Steel: What’s Really Inside Your Sink

“Stainless steel” is not one material. The grade printed on the box changes how your sink ages far more than its price tag suggests.

What the numbers mean

The number describes the alloy — the mix of metals in the steel.

  • 304 contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Chromium forms an invisible protective layer that “heals” itself; nickel adds corrosion resistance and that clean, bright tone.
  • 202 replaces much of the costly nickel with manganese. It looks similar in the showroom but resists corrosion far less.

Why 304 matters at the sink

A sink lives in salt, acid (lemon, tomato, curd), detergents and constant moisture. Over months, 202 is more prone to pitting, rust spots and dulling around the drain and edges. 304 shrugs the same conditions off, which is why it is the food-grade standard used in quality kitchenware.

The magnet myth

You may have heard “if a magnet sticks, it’s not real steel.” That is not reliable. Cold-forming a sink can make even genuine 304 slightly magnetic in places. A magnet cannot tell you the grade — only the manufacturer’s specification and a trusted brand can.
